As you grow older, your pelvic muscles start to weaken. Especially in women after childbirth, aging, pregnancy, and obesity. Kegel exercises also help women who have a problem with urine leakage and bowel movement control.
Kegel exercise tightens and strengthens the muscles of the pelvic floor that support the bladder, uterus, rectum, and small and large intestines.

How do you find your pelvic floor muscles?

  • To start kegel exercises, you must know where your pelvic floor muscles are located in the body. It can be tricky but to find the set of muscles you can place your clean-washed finger inside your vagina and then, tight up or hold up your vaginal muscles around your finger.
  • The second easiest way is to stop your urine mid-flow. The pelvic muscles that you contract and hold for this action are your pelvic floor muscles.

How to perform kegel exercises?

  • The most interesting part of this exercise is that you can perform it anywhere in any position even when you are eating, watching television, driving, resting, lying, or sitting on a chair.
  • To perform the kegel exercise, tense your pelvic floor muscles take hold with a count of 5 seconds, and then relax your muscles. Repeat it 10 times.
  • Over the next few days, increase your hold count and repetitions. Make your aim to do this exercise in three sets of 10 repetitions every day.
  • Practicing this exercise regularly strengthens and tightens your vaginal muscles and pelvic floor muscles which also give you pleasure while having sexual intercourse with your partner.

Cautions

  • Don’t get the usual of doing kegel exercises to start and stop your urine flow when you piss. It may interrupt your bladder functions. Also increases the chances of urinary tract infections.
  • Practicing kegel exercises incorrectly or with too much pressure and force may cause too much tightness in vaginal muscles. This may induce pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Urine leakage may strike you back if you stop doing kegel exercises once you start.
